Compounded Magic Mouthwash Patient Monograph
COMMON USES
Magic mouthwashes are compounds generally used for pain, sores and ulcers in the mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach. These can be from chemotherapy, radiation, oral surgery or from other causes. These products help relieve discomfort, improve healing, decrease pain and inflammation and treat/prevent infections.
The formula varies depending on your specific need. These compounds may contain:
⦁ Antibiotics to treat/prevent bacterial infection
⦁ Antifungals to treat/prevent fungal infection
⦁ Antacids help coat the affected area(s) and reduce acid reflux
⦁ Topical pain relievers that numb the area(s)
⦁ Corticosteroids to decrease inflammation, redness and accompanying pain
⦁ Anti-allergy medications for pain relief and to dry the wounds improving healing
⦁ Gastroprotectants to coat and heal gastric ulcers
HOW TO USE THE MEDICATION
Always shake the bottle before dispensing. If the product is too thick to pour out, let it sit at room temperature for 15 minutes.
These compounds are either swished in the mouth and/or gargled then spit out, or swallowed. Only swallow if directed by prescriber.
These medications work through direct contact with the affected areas, ensuring thorough coating of the area by swishing for at least 1-2 minutes. Do not rinse your mouth or drink anything for 15-30 minutes after using unless directed to.
These washes are typically used every 4-6 hours as needed for pain or 15-30 minutes before meals. Be cautious as the mouthwash may cause numbing: avoid burning, freezing, or damaging your mouth while eating or drinking by checking the temperature of your food or drinks.
POSSIBLE ADVERSE AND SIDE EFFECTS
This medication is generally very well tolerated. Possible side effects vary between different formulations and if the medication is to be swallowed or spit out. The doses used in these medications are lower than usual treatment doses so side
effects are less likely. You may notice mild irritation to the open wounds, this should lessen as the wounds heal. You may also notice some stomach upset, taste disturbances, or dry mouth.
STORAGE REQUIREMENTS
Store in the fridge. Do not use it if there is a change in the taste, smell or look of the product. Refer to the specific BUD (beyond use date) on the bottle.
