Compounded Pain Topicals
COMMON USES
These compounds are used to relieve pain and/or inflammation. Use is patient specific but common uses are arthritis, nerve pain, and muscle pain.
HOW TO USE THE MEDICATION
These products are intended for topical use only. Do not ingest and avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, ears, nose and anal-gential region unless directed otherwise.
Wash your hands and the affected area before applying. Rub the compound into the affected area(s) gently until the medication is absorbed. The compound may leave a residue.
Wash your hands after application (unless it is directed for use on the hands).
Do not wash the area(s) off for at least 1 hour after application to allow complete absorption.
Do not cover or use heat/ cold packs unless directed to as this affects absorption.
These medications are typically used 2-4 times a day as needed. Use as directed by your prescriber and pharmacy.
POSSIBLE ADVERSE AND SIDE EFFECTS
Possible adverse effects vary between different formulations. Generally they are well tolerated. Any topical product may cause some irritation to the skin. If severe irritation occurs, wash the product off with soap and water.
Some products may contain capsaicin, camphor or menthol. These ingredients work by causing a mild burning sensation, dulling the pain. Burning improves with continued use.
Some products include a numbing agent, be cautious not to damage the numbed area.
STORAGE REQUIREMENTS
Store at room temperature.
Beyond use date (BUD) is 30 days to 6 months. Refer to the date indicated on your prescription.
