Compounded All Purpose Nipple Ointment

COMMON USES
All purpose nipple ointment is used for nipple discomfort, pain, or rash due to breastfeeding. The most common formula contains an antibiotic, antifungal and steroid.
The antibiotic is to kill any bacteria that can be growing in the damaged skin and prevent mastitis (infection of the breast tissue). The antifungal is to treat any fungal infections in the skin, this fungus is often present in the infants mouths and passes to the nipples during feeding. The corticosteroid is to reduce inflammation and pain.
It is important that the infant is also assessed for oral thrush. If not they may reinfect the breast.

HOW TO USE THE MEDICATION
The medication is intended for topical application only.
Wash your hands and affected area(s) with mild fragrance free soap. Pat the area dry.
Apply a thin layer of the ointment to the affected area(s). These compounds are usually applied 2-4 times a day and/or after every feeding. Wash hands after application.
Do not wash or wipe off the ointment before breastfeeding unless directed to.
The medication has minimal to no effect on the baby, and the ointment layer will help reduce further irritation.
Use the product for the shortest possible duration. Improvement is typically seen in the first week of use. If symptoms persist past 2-3 weeks while using or if they return when the product is discontinued seek reassessment by your prescriber.
